Transponder keys are not a modern development in car security – pretty much any vehicle manufactured past 1998 will make use of transponder key technology. The idea is simple: instead of a regular key that physically engages the tumblers of your car door’s lock, transponder keys are electronic, utilising a unique code in the key that must match the one in your lock in order to activate. When it comes to the ignition, transponder keys take security one step further. The ignition has a special chip inside it that responds to a unique radio frequency identification (RFID) code generated by the key. If that code is not present, then the car simply will not start. This prevents would-be thieves from either hacking a key blank or hot-wiring your car physically.
